Abstract

Purpose: This narrative ethnography aimed to explore the trajectory of health care seeking behavior in the professional health care sector among elderly with chronic diseases. The study question was ¡°how and why a person who have two or more chronic disease approaches and utilizes orthodox health care services?¡±

Methods: Fieldwork were conducted between December 2011 and January 2013 in a general hospital, a clinic of western medicine, and a clinic of Korean medicine. Data were collected using participant observation and ethnographic interviews with seven key informants and 12 general informants. Analyzing frames were time, space, relation, and interaction.
Results: Informants with multiple chronic diseases seek tailored care. On the journey of health care seeking 3 constituents were emerged; focusing on a change of the body and defining its meaning; selecting a confidential profession or facility based on psychosocial accessibility and efficiency on to get their goal: coding with health profession and treatment modality by conditional accepting, contraction, negotiation, and active assertion.

Conclusion: Health care seeking behavior is important for patients who suffer from multiple chronic disease to keep their health and quality of life. On the journey of seeking tailored care, informants and their families faced many barriers. It is the nurse who could to guide them to the safe and efficient journey of health care.
